In the world of commercial websites, blogging can be a double-edged sword. Some businesses blog religiously. Others steer clear, fearing outdated posts or a lack of time to maintain one. So which is the correct answer?
At Foxxweb Design, we often get asked: “Do I really need a blog on my website?” The answer isn’t always black and white, but below we look at the pros and cons to help you make an informed decision.

The Case For Blogging
1. Google’s Love Fresh Content
Search engines favour websites that are updated regularly. A blog gives you the opportunity to keep your site alive in Google’s eyes. Each post is a new page, a new chance to be found for different keywords, and a signal that your business is active and engaged.
2. Authority and Trust
A well-written blog can position your business as an expert in your field. Whether you’re offering website design tips, showcasing recent projects, or answering common client questions, your content builds trust with potential customers.
3. Engagement and Sharing
People don’t often share homepages, but they do share useful blog articles. A blog gives you something valuable to post on social media or in newsletters, helping attract traffic and keep your brand in the conversation.
4. SEO Opportunities
Blogs let you naturally include keywords and phrases related to your services. This helps your site rank better in search results over time, especially for long-tail search queries (searches using 5, 6 or 7 keywords) that customers are actually typing into Google.
The Case Against Blogging
1. Outdated Posts Are a Red Flag
Nothing screams “we forgot about this site” like a blog with the most recent post dated three years ago. A stale blog can make a business look inactive, even if you’re actually thriving. Or even worse just the one phone blog that says “Visit here again for all our news and events” with a date from 5 years ago!
Old News is Bad News!
2. It’s a Time Commitment
Creating high-quality, original blog content takes time and planning. If no one in your business has the time (or interest) to write regularly, you could be better off without one.
3. Poor Content Can Hurt More Than Help
A weak blog filled with generic or low-quality posts doesn’t provide value to your visitors, or to search engines. In fact, it can dilute your brand message and harm your credibility.
So… Should You Blog?
Only start a blog if you can commit to keeping it relevant and useful. That doesn’t mean posting every week. Even one post per month (or quarter!) can make a difference, as long as it’s good content and your blogging frequency is maintained. A few evergreen articles that answer common client questions or showcase your expertise are better than dozens of rushed posts.
If you decide not to blog, that’s okay too. Just make sure the rest of your website is up-to-date, professional, and clearly communicates your value.
